Die Benediktushöhle symbolisiert das Einsiedlerdasein des Heiligen Benedikt von Nursia. Eine in Stein gemeißelte Inschrift erläutert:

"Der gottselige Jüngling Benedictus verliess des Vaters Haus und Erbe und suchte im Verlangen, Gott allein zu gefallen einen abgelegenen Ort auf, der Subiako heißt. Dort zog er sich in eine enge Höhle und lebte daselbst drei Jahre lang den Menschen unbekannt einsam unter Gottes Augen."
