The former minaret of the main mosque in Seville is now the bell tower of the cathedral.
In the 15th century, the former mosque on this site was demolished – the minaret, however, was used as a bell tower for the new cathedral. Today, the Giralda is considered the city's landmark. There are a total of 27 bells in the tower. When visiting Seville, you should definitely climb the Giralda – from here you have a fantastic view.
The name Giralda is derived from the Spanish word girar (to turn, to circle), as the statue at the top of the tower holds a weather vane in its hands and turns with the wind.
