Das ab 1741 erbaute Stadtschloss am Markt wurde im Auftrag des Herzogs Ernst August zunächst im spätbarocken Baustil errichtet. Später erfolgte eine klassizistische Umgestaltung. Heute präsentiert es die facettenreichen Sammlungen des Thüringer Museums zur Residenz-, Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte des Landes. Zu den besonderen Kostbarkeiten zählen ein exquisiter Bestand an Thüringer Porzellan, Fayencen und Glas, eine aus der Barockzeit stammende Apotheke und Gemälde des 19. Jahrhunderts aus der „Curt-Elschner-Stiftung“.
