Smederevo Fortress

Smederevo Fortress is one of the largest lowland medieval fortresses in Europe and a remarkable example of late medieval Serbian architecture. Built in the 15th century as the capital of the Serbian Despotate, it functioned as both a fortified stronghold and an urban centre. Its scale, historical importance, and strategic position on the Danube make it one of Serbia’s most significant heritage sites.
Construction of the fortress began in 1427 under Despot Đurađ Branković, who intended to establish a new राजधानी that would serve not only as a military stronghold but also as a রাজনৈতিক, cultural, and economic centre. The complex consists of two main sections: the Small Town (the castle), completed between 1427 and 1430 as the residence of the ruling family, and the larger fortified town, enclosed by massive walls and reinforced with 25 towers. A notable feature is the inscription in red brick on the Krstača (Huge Cross) Tower, commemorating the completion of the fortress and expressing gratitude to God.

The construction was carried out under considerable urgency, requiring materials to be transported from distant աղբուրցներ such as Mount Kosmaj, as well as reused stone from ancient sites including Viminacium. Over time, the fortress developed into the last capital of medieval Serbia, serving as its political and cultural centre until it fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1459, marking the end of the Serbian medieval state. Local legend attributes the কঠিন conditions of construction to Jerina (Irene Kantakouzene), the despot’s wife, who became known in folklore as “Damned Jerina”.

Despite remaining largely intact for centuries, the fortress suffered severe damage during the Second World War, when an explosion of stored ammunition devastated parts of the structure and the surrounding town. Archaeological discoveries continue to shed light on its past, including the 2012 finding of a noblewoman’s tomb with valuable jewellery and nearby church remains. Today, the fortress stands as a monumental reminder of Serbia’s medieval heritage and is closely connected with the collections displayed in the nearby Museum of Smederevo.
