In the 14th century, the castle was a medieval moated castle, which was later converted into a hunting lodge by Elector Ludwig V. During the Thirty Years' War and the Palatinate War of Succession, the castle suffered severe damage twice. The castle was rebuilt in the 17th century. After Carl Philipp had the palace garden designed in the 18th century, his successor Carl Theodor commissioned the construction of the building that still exists today.
Since the 20th century, the rooms have been used as a museum to commemorate the time of Carl Theodor. The electoral apartments can be visited as part of a guided tour.
