Between 1720 and 1725, Duke Gustav Samuel Leopold had the ducal palace built in its late baroque form according to the plans of the Swedish architect Jonas Erikson Sundahl. The ducal palace experienced its heyday between 1735 and 1775 under Duke Christian IV. Famous artists were guests, including the composer Christoph Willibald von Gluck. Maximilian I, the nephew of the duke and later King of Bavaria, also spent part of his childhood in the palace.
In 1793, Zweibrücken was occupied by French revolutionary troops and the palace was destroyed.
