Nach Südosten schließt sich der Schlosspark an. Er wurde um 1704 angelegt und erhielt sogar eine Orangerie, Marstallgebäude und einen Musikpavillon. Ebenso entstand die Schlosskapelle.
Die Innenausstattung war dem damaligen Herrscher besonders wichtig und deswegen dauerte es bis 1726, ehe alles fertig möbliert und die Zimmer eingerichtet waren. Noch heute lassen sich die Spuren bekannter einheimischer und italienischer Künstler im Schloss erkennen. Bemerkenswert sind dabei vor allem die Arbeiten im Treppenhaus und der Schlosskapelle.
Nach dem Tod des Herzogs wurde das Schloss umfunktioniert und beherbergte seit 1735 die Stadtverwaltung Saalfelds. 1919 bis 1922 richtete man ein Behördenhaus ein.
Leider zerstörte 1953 ein verheerender Brand das Dach der Schlosskapelle. 1966 wurde es restauriert. Heute ist das Schloss Sitz der Landkreisverwaltung Saalfeld-Rudolstadt.
