Castle Rosegg in the Rosental was built in 1772 by Prince Orsini-Rosenberg for his Italian mistress, Madame Lucrezia. The castle strongly resembles the Italian "Brentavillen," as Orsini-Rosenberg spent several years in Italy and wanted to bring a bit of Italian flair to this summer residence in the heart of Carinthia!
The furnishings and many parts of the decor are still from that time!
The second owner of Castle Rosegg was Peter Ritter von Bohr, a financial advisor to the Emperor and, for a time, a much-sought-after counterfeiters. He was the one who founded the current animal park in Rosegg. For this purpose, he had the castle of the nearby "Raser Ritter" dismantled and used the stones to construct the animal park wall, which still delineates the wildlife park today. However, von Bohr only kept Castle Rosegg for 2 years. Perhaps he only used the beautiful castle to launder his counterfeit money?
Since 1831, Castle Rosegg has been owned by the family of Liechtenstein. Prince Johannes of Liechtenstein acquired the castle from Peter Ritter von Bohr for one of his sons. Today, the castle serves as a venue for summer events, concerts, and theater, and houses the atmospheric Castle Café.
