The complex, which was built in a horseshoe shape around a spacious courtyard in place of a medieval castle, is the landmark of Ottenschlag. Built in the 16th century, the castle is known for its 3 striking round towers and the magnificently decorated Renaissance portal.
History of the castle
Before the province of Lower Austria acquired and renovated Ottenschlag Castle from Göttweig Abbey in 1986, it was owned by important noble families for centuries.
The first documentary mention of the village dates back to 1096. In 1479, Caspar von Rogendorf, whose dynasty was also the owner of Pöggstall Castle - known for its still-preserved torture chamber - appears in the eventful succession of rulers. This period also saw the expansion of the castle.
In 1523, Wolfgang von Rog(g)endorf began to erect the present-day castle building around the early medieval stronghold. The castle itself was torn down in the 18th century due to dilapidation and the moat was filled in with the rubble.
After several changes of ownership, Göttweig Abbey acquired this extensive forest property and the castle in 1931. The building served as accommodation for the police, district court, forestry administration, post office, notary's office and several tenants.
From 1992 to 2022, Ottenschlag Castle was home to the technical college for rural business and household management, with a focus on tourism and event management, and was an educational center for rural areas.
In 2023, it was sold by the state of Lower Austria and is now privately owned.
However, the cellar of the castle still houses the wine tavern "Im Schloss", which spoils its guests with hot and cold delicacies from the region.
