Auf der Nordseite des Großen Ettersbergs liegt am Waldrand die zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts von Herzog Wilhelm Ernst erbaute Schlossanlage von Ettersburg.

Während Herzogin Anna Amalia auf der Burg Ettersburg ihre sommerlichen Hoflager im ausgewählten literarisch-musischen Kreis abhielt, begann mit der Übernahme ihres Urenkels Carl Alexander im Jahr 1842 eine zweite kulturelle Hochzeit. Der junge Erbgroßherzog ließ die beiden Schlossparterres nach Plänen von Carl Eduard Petzold umgestalten und einen sechs Hektar großen Landschaftspark sowie die große Forsthauswiese anlegen. Durch den 1845 angelegten »Pücklerschlag« eröffnet sich ein wunderschönes Panorama mit Blick zum ehemaligen barocken Jagdschloss.
