Proudly standing on its wave-beaten rock, its silhouette stands out against the azure Mediterranean sky. Since the year 672, it has stood guard over the Catalan port, defying the centuries.
Where the Mediterranean meets the Pyrenees, Collioure is open to the sea. The Château Royal is just as inseparable from Collioure as the town is from the sea. Home to the Kings of Majorca in the 13th and 14th centuries, the castle became a fortress in the 15th century. The Kings of Aragon, Spain and France transformed it into a citadel in the 16th and 17th centuries. The bow of its ramparts, founded on the Mediterranean, fascinated 20th-century painters. After 1939, Spanish Republicans were incarcerated in the dungeons of its detention centre. Nowadays, the demilitarised wartime site has been declared a Historic Monument, and is open to enthusiasts and walkers alike.
