Edwardian castle with unique river defences.
Rhuddlan Castle was constructed by Edward I in the late 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer Wales. The castle is notable for its unusual "twin-towered gatehouse" design and carefully engineered river channel that allowed supply ships to reach the fortress directly.
Visitors can explore the remains of the towers, walls, and moat while learning about the Statute of Rhuddlan, which established English rule over Wales. The site provides an important insight into medieval military planning and political control.
Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter.
Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
