Markgraf Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden, nach siegreichen Schlachten gegen das osmanische Heer auch als "Türkenlouis" gerühmt, baute in Rastatt Großartiges:Nach dem Vorbild von Versailles entstand hier an Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts die älteste Barockresidenz am Oberrhein.
Italienische Künstler statteten die prunkvollen Räume des Schlosses mit virtuosen Deckenmalereien und kunstvollen Stuckdekorationen aus. Herzstück der Residenz ist der Ahnensaal.
