The medieval castle is situated on a hill near Welshpool in Wales and is known for its gardens and the large collection of artefacts from the family's travels to India.
Probably built in the 13th century, Powis Castle was subject to border disputes between Wales and England for a long time and also survived many a war. The owners of the castle changed frequently until 1587, when Sir Edward Herbert acquired the fortress and began to convert it into a residential castle. Under the generations of the Herbert family (later the Herbert Clive family), an Elizabethan gallery was created and the magnificent bedchamber was furnished. In the 18th century, rooms for the servants and a ballroom were created. The castle's gardens are particularly famous, with influences from France and Italy. In the world-famous garden numerous rare plants, especially the 14-metre-high and over 300-year-old yew hedges are worth seeing, statues line the lawns and an orangery lies on the terraces. The collection in the castle is one of the largest in the world of its style, as the family accumulated paintings, sculptures and other artefacts over the centuries, especially from India and Far East Asia. The Clive Museum can be visited and offers numerous exhibits worth seeing.
