Der »alte Palast« war der Sitz des Stadtparlaments und stellte den Mittelpunkt der weltlichen Macht im Florenz des 14. Jahrhunderts dar.

Im Jahr 1299 beauftragten die herrschenden Zünfte den Bau des majestätischen Palazzos. Ab 1314 diente er als Parlament der Republik Florenz.

Zusammen mit der Piazza della Signoria bildete er das politische und soziale Zentrum der Stadt. Viele namhafte Künstler, darunter Da Vinci und Michelangelo, verewigten sich mit Fresken und Wandgemälden. (Typisch für Da Vinci: sein Werk „Anghiari-Schlacht” blieb unvollendet. Es wurde später von Giorgio Vasari übermalt.)

Heute dient der Palazzo Vecchio als Rathaus von Florenz. Der 94 m hohe Arnolfo-Turm prägt die Silhouette der Stadt entscheidend mit.
