The Castle atop of Pyrgos Kallistis is a castle of Venetian methodology built in 1580, in the beginnings of the Ottoman reign on the island and is the newest of the five castles that can be found around Santorini.
Pyrgos Kallistis or usually, simply "Pyrgos" and formerly Kenourgiobourgo, is the highest village of Santorini, located 10 kilometers southeast of Fira. Pyrgos was one of the five castles of the island and was the capital of Santorini after the abandonment of Skaros Castle in the 18th century and before the current capital, Fira.
The Castle of Pyrgos is relatively the newest of Santorini. It was created in 1580. It should be noted that Santorini was under Turkish rule as early as 1566. However, given that the castle is of the same style as the other 4 castles on the island that were Venetian, it is also characterized as "Venetian".
The castle follows the type of fortified settlement where around the core a fortified enclosure was organized by the outer walls of the houses. In its center was the small square, with the churches of Panagia and Agios Georgios. A stone-paved road separates the castle from the newer buildings of the settlement.
An interesting peculiarity of Kastelli is that the settlement was built on a series of underground arcades that were used as shelters and escape routes in case the settlement fell into the hands of the enemies.
