The Counts Palatine of the Rhine built their first residence in Heidelberg. Over several centuries, the medieval castle developed into an impressive palace. After the Palatinate was involved in the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century, the walls of the castle were blown up. Around 1900, there was a debate as to whether the castle should be rebuilt. Representatives of the preservation of historical monuments prevailed and ensured that the castle was preserved as a ruin.

The palace garden is freely accessible during the day. Visits to the interior are only possible as part of a guided tour and last approx. one hour.
