Impressive medieval town fortress with extensive walls.
Denbigh Castle dominates the Vale of Clwyd and was established by Henry de Lacy following Edward I's conquest of Wales. The fortress was designed as both a military stronghold and a centre for English settlement in North Wales.
The remains include impressive gatehouses, towers, and sections of town walls. Visitors can explore the extensive ruins and enjoy far-reaching views across the surrounding countryside while discovering the turbulent medieval history of the region.
Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter.
Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
