Delitzsch Baroque Castle

Once built as a medieval moated castle, the building served as a traveler's residence for Saxon rulers and housed the administrative offices of the sovereign. In the Middle Ages, the moat was filled with water and formed part of the protective fortifications. The castle was given its Renaissance style when it was first remodeled. After the division of the Saxon lands and the takeover of the Principality of Saxe-Merseburg, the castle was chosen as a dowager's residence for duchesses. From 1860, the residence was used as a women's prison for several years until the town of Delitzsch bought the castle and the museum moved in. Today, the baroque castle houses the town museum, the tourist information office, a sound vault, the registry office with a magnificent wedding room and the district music school. The 50-metre-high observation tower also offers excellent views of the historic town center and the surrounding area. The baroque garden was laid out in 1692/93 as a small pleasure garden in the French style.
