Britain's oldest surviving post-Roman stone castle.
Chepstow Castle is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone castle in Britain and occupies a spectacular clifftop position above the River Wye. Founded shortly after the Norman Conquest in 1067, the castle evolved over several centuries into a vast and sophisticated fortress.
The site features impressive gatehouses, towers, domestic apartments, and the oldest surviving castle doors in Europe. Visitors can trace the changing styles of medieval fortification while enjoying views across the beautiful Wye Valley.
Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter.
Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
