Site géré par le Conseil départemental d'Eure-et-Loir depuis 2005, le château de Maintenon est un domaine inattendu, à taille humaine, et riche d’une histoire millénaire.

En 1674, Françoise d'Aubigné, veuve du poète Scarron et future Madame de Maintenon, achète le domaine qui lui donnera son nom. Elle aménage et fait agrandir le château pour y recevoir Louis XIV qui trouve en ce lieu l’opportunité d'alimenter les bassins du Châteaux de Versailles par les eaux de l'Eure.

C'est à Vauban que l'on doit le projet titanesque de l’aqueduc, caprice royal inouï resté inachevé ; l’architecte réalise ici son unique ouvrage civil, dont les vestiges signent aujourd’hui la singularité du site.
