A Renaissance and Neoclassical palace in Provence
In the heart of the Drôme region, overlooking the plains and mountains, the castle of Grignan is built on a rocky outcrop above the village. As a witness to the architecture of the Renaissance and French classicism, the building has an eventful history behind it.
Mentioned as early as the 11th century, the castle was transformed into a prestigious residence by the Adhémar family during the Renaissance. In the 17th century, the Marquise de Sévigné stayed there with her daughter Françoise-Marguerite. Dismantled during the Revolution and rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, it has belonged to the Drôme department since 1979, which is pursuing an ambitious restoration programme.
The Château de Grignan, which was classified as a historical monument in 1993 and labelled a "Musée de France", offers visitors valuable evidence of the way of life in different eras.
This enchanting place is also the setting for a cultural programme throughout the year: theatre, music, etc.
