Sur la route de l’Espagne à 3 km de Saint-Jean-de-Luz, arrêtez-vous au Château d’Urtubie.

Cette demeure appartient à la même famille depuis 1341. Fortifiée, agrandie, elle raconte 6 siècles de l'histoire du Pays Basque.

Le roi Louis XI y séjourna en 1463 ; Louis XIV érigea le domaine en vicomté en 1654 ; Soult puis Wellington y passèrent lors des guerres napoléoniennes.

Le Château d’Urtubie est aujourd’hui classé Monument Historique.La visite ouvre des pièces décorées avec raffinement : meubles du XVIème au XIXème siècles, tapisseries de Bruxelles, d'Aubusson et de Beauvais, portraits de la famille d'Urtubie, trophées de chasse.

La chapelle du XVIIème, l’orangerie du XVIIIème siècle et le parc et ses jardins à l'anglaise du XVIIIème complètent le patrimoine de ce site.
