It stands at an altitude of 585 meters on the Schlossberg massif.
Built on three sandstone spurs, it actually comprises three castles: Grand Ochsenstein, Petit Ochsenstein and Château de Wachelheim.
The site is partially enclosed (only the Grand Ochsenstein is accessible), but the remains of a castle chapel are still visible.
