The Ebenthal Castle in Carinthia is one of the significant historical castle complexes in the region and combines Renaissance and Baroque architecture with impressive cultural history. The castle was built in 1566 by Christoph von Neuhaus beneath the Greifenfels Castle, which had been owned by the von Neuhaus family since the early 15th century. Archduke Karl II officially confirmed the ownership of the castle in 1567, which was named Ebenthal.
Over the centuries, the building has been expanded and remodeled several times. In the 17th century, a third floor was added, and characteristic turret-like structures with onion domes were built.
After its acquisition by the Count von Goëss family in 1704, the castle was remodeled in the Baroque style and surrounded by a spacious park.
Particularly noteworthy is the magnificent banquet hall with its barrel vault and the elaborate illusionary paintings by the famous Carinthian Baroque painter Josef Ferdinand Fromiller from the year 1748. Despite severe damage from major fires in 1919 and 1948, the castle was carefully restored and has remained in the possession of the Goëss family to this day.
Today, Ebenthal Castle serves as a cultural venue for events with concerts in the banquet hall, while the historic castle park is publicly accessible.
