Il Castello di Itri è una maestosa fortificazione medievale che domina il borgo dall’alto di uno sperone roccioso. Costruito tra il IX e l’XI secolo e legato alla figura di Fra’ Diavolo, offre una vista spettacolare sulla valle e racconta secoli di storia tra difesa, potere e leggenda.
 Il Castello di Itri domina il centro storico del borgo dall’alto di uno sperone roccioso, come un silenzioso custode della Valle di Sant’Andrea e dell’antico passaggio tra Roma e Napoli. La sua posizione strategica non è casuale: Itri sorge lungo il tracciato dell’antica Via Appia, una delle più importanti arterie dell’Impero Romano, e il castello aveva il compito di controllare e difendere questo fondamentale asse di comunicazione.

Le origini della fortificazione risalgono probabilmente all’epoca longobarda (IX–X secolo), anche se l’impianto attuale è il risultato di numerosi interventi e ampliamenti avvenuti nel corso dei secoli. In epoca normanna e sveva il castello assunse un ruolo militare di primo piano, venendo poi ulteriormente rafforzato durante il dominio angioino e aragonese. Ogni epoca ha lasciato il proprio segno, rendendo il complesso una stratificazione viva di storia e architettura.

La struttura si presenta come una fortezza irregolare, perfettamente adattata alla morfologia della roccia su cui sorge. Le possenti mura in pietra calcarea locale, le torri di avvistamento e i camminamenti difensivi raccontano un passato segnato da assedi, battaglie e necessità di controllo del territorio. Particolarmente suggestiva è la torre cilindrica, simbolo del castello, che svetta sul borgo e offre una vista ampia e spettacolare sulla valle sottostante e, nelle giornate limpide, fino al mare.

All’interno delle mura si aprivano ambienti destinati alla vita militare e civile: magazzini, cisterne per la raccolta dell’acqua, alloggi per la guarnigione e spazi di rappresentanza. Il castello non era solo un baluardo difensivo, ma anche un centro di potere, attorno al quale si è sviluppato nel tempo il nucleo abitato di Itri, con le sue stradine, le case addossate alla roccia e le chiese medievali.

Il Castello di Itri è legato anche alla tradizione popolare e alla memoria collettiva del territorio. La sua storia si intreccia con racconti di feudatari, soldati e briganti, tra cui la figura leggendaria di Fra’ Diavolo, simbolo di resistenza e ribellione, profondamente radicata nell’identità itrana.

Oggi il castello rappresenta uno dei simboli più riconoscibili di Itri e un punto di riferimento culturale e paesaggistico di grande valore. Restaurato e valorizzato, è spesso sede di eventi, visite guidate e iniziative culturali che permettono di riscoprire la storia locale e di vivere il fascino senza tempo di questo luogo. Salire al castello significa compiere un viaggio nella storia, tra pietre antiche, panorami mozzafiato e il silenzio carico di memoria di una delle fortificazioni più suggestive del sud del Lazio.
