Le rovine del Castello di Canossa si trovano sulla cima di una rupe nella zona dei calanchi dell'Appennino reggiano.

Costruito nel X secolo da Adalberto Atto sulla sommità di una piccola rupe di arenaria bianca, il complesso del castello era difeso da tre strati di mura e comprendeva anche un monastero e la chiesa di Sant'Apollonio. Dopo la morte della grancontessa Matilde di Canossa, esso cambiò spesso proprietario e venne più volte distrutto e ricostruito, fino a quando venne acquistato dallo Stato italiano, che lo dichiarò Monumento Nazionale e fece alcuni interventi di restauro e recupero. Oggigiorno è sede del Museo Naborre Campanini, dedicato agli scavi archeologici fatti nel castello e alla figura di Matilde di Canossa.

Da Reggio Emilia: prendere la SS63 fino a Rivalta, imboccare la strada provinciale 23 fino a Montecavolo e attraversare Salvarano e Bedogno fino al castello.

Da Parma: prendere la strada provinciale 513r fino a San Polo d’Enza, poi la strada provinciale 73 fino al castello.
