Erected in the 13th century on the site of a former church dedicated to Saint Erasmus (hence Eramo, Ermo and then Elmo), Castel Sant'Elmo has a long history of sieges and was repeatedly converted into a prison. It is the largest castle in Naples and from its elevated position it offers a panoramic view of the city, Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. Today the castle houses the Museo Napoli Novecento 1910-1980, which exhibits the works of more than 170 Neapolitan (or city-related) artists of the 20th century, some temporary exhibitions and various events.
