Dramatic hilltop castle with cave beneath the keep.
Carreg Cennen Castle occupies one of the most dramatic locations in Wales, perched high above the surrounding countryside on a limestone cliff. The castle's origins are uncertain, though it became an important medieval stronghold associated with Welsh princes and later Norman lords.
Visitors can explore the ruined walls, towers, and the famous cave beneath the castle. The panoramic views across Carmarthenshire and the Brecon Beacons make Carreg Cennen one of Wales' most memorable historic sites.
Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter.
Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
