Wales' largest castle, famous for its leaning tower and vast water defences.
Caerphilly Castle is the largest castle in Wales and one of the great medieval fortresses of Europe. Constructed by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century, it was designed primarily to resist Welsh attacks led by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. The castle is especially famous for its enormous water defences, which surround the site with artificial lakes and moats.
The castle's dramatic towers, gatehouses, and extensive walls dominate the town of Caerphilly. Visitors can climb the battlements, see the famously leaning south-east tower, and enjoy exhibitions detailing the history of warfare and castle life in medieval Wales.
Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter.
Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
