Edward I's unfinished but highly sophisticated concentric castle on Anglesey.
Beaumaris Castle, located on the Isle of Anglesey, is widely regarded as the most technically perfect of Edward I's concentric castles in Wales. Construction began in 1295 as part of the English king's campaign to control North Wales following the defeat of the Welsh princes. Although never fully completed due to financial pressures and conflict in Scotland, the castle remains one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in Europe.
Visitors today can explore the remarkably symmetrical design, broad moat, outer and inner curtain walls, and numerous towers and gatehouses. The site offers spectacular views across the Menai Strait towards Snowdonia and provides a fascinating insight into the engineering sophistication of the late 13th century.
Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter.
Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
