The gray stone bastion, located on the slopes of Mount Rocchetta, is one of the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and the lake. Built at the beginning of the 16th century, when the Venetian domination of Riva had just ended, to guarantee greater security to the village below and its inhabitants, it was destroyed in 1703 by French troops led by General Vendome who undermined its central body making the fortress unusable.
It can be easily reached with a road that climbs through the vegetation up to about two hundred metres above sea level. A more rugged path then leads to the church of Santa Barbara (610 m) and the highest peaks of the Rocchetta (1520 m).
From 2020, a brand new panoramic inclined lift connects the historic centre of Riva del Garda with the Venetian Bastion in just two minutes (departure from Via Monte Oro).
Over the centuries, the Bastion has lost its original military function but, thanks to recent restorations, it has retained its severe charm. It has recently been subject to conservative restoration, followed by the Superintendence of Architectural Heritage of the Autonomous Province of Trento. Visitors can admire the massive external structure and what remains of the interior. No less interesting are the views of the city below and the magnificent panorama of Upper Garda.
