The prosperity resulting from silver mining in the 16th century enabled the construction of numerous castles in Saxony, including the Augustusburg hunting lodge built on the Schellenberg in 1568 by Elector Augustus I of Saxony. Due to the altitude, the water supply could only be ensured through the use of mining techniques and has only been preserved here in its original form. The 130-metre-deep well bears witness to the high level of technology used to pump water in the 16th century.
The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří mining region has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2019. The Augustusburg Hunting Lodge is involved in the project as an "associated object", i.e. indirectly, with the fountain house in the farmyard. The fountain house can only be visited with a guided tour.
The castle courtyard, the ticket office area, the motorcycle museum, the hunting animal and bird museum as well as the carriage museum (1 step á 9 cm) and our special exhibition are barrier-free accessible.
Wheelchair users, accompanying persons (sign B) and children up to the age of 6 accompanied by an adult have free admission to all museums.
