At the top of Bonadies hill 300 meters above sea level, Arechi Castle dominates Salerno and its gulf.

Built as a Byzantine fortification in the 6th century, probably by enlarging an earlier Roman castrum, and strengthened by the Lombard prince Arechi II in the 8th, it was enlarged over the centuries by the Normans, Angevins and Aragons, transforming from a military fortress to a noble residence. After centuries of neglect, it has been owned by the Province of Salerno since 1960, has been restored, and today, in addition to the impressive architectural remains and defensive towers, visitors can admire a Medieval Museum, with ceramics, glassware and artifacts that tell the story of life in the fortress from the early Middle Ages to the modern age.

Within the Arechi Castle are are a number of nature trails (for example, this one), suitable for those who want to hike in the midst of the Mediterranean machine. Two trails are available to those who want to walk up to the castle from the city: "NaturArechi discovering the Bastille and the Ancient Walls" and the "Prince's Path."
