Are Castle
The mighty ruins of Are Castle sit enthroned above the wine village of Altenahr. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1121. The last male heir, Count Friedrich von Are-Hochstaden, donated the castle to the Cologne church in 1246. The archbishops of Cologne continued to expand it, as Are Castle served as a bulwark to protect their possessions on the Ahr, as an administrative seat for the area around Altenahr, which was combined to form the office of Are, and also as a prison for high-ranking prisoners.
The downfall of the castle began with the invasion of French troops into the territory of the Electorate of Cologne. In 1690, after a nine-month siege, they conquered the castle and burned the village of Altenahr to the ground. Over the next few years, the occupying forces changed several times until the Cologne Cathedral Abbey had the castle occupied in 1706. However, the inhabitants of Altenahr were so harassed by the soldiers in the castle that they asked the Elector for help in 1714, after the peace treaty of Rastatt. The castle was then made uninhabitable by being blown up. The people of Altenahr used many materials to rebuild their destroyed houses and to construct a new office building at the foot of the castle hill.
The castle ruins were extensively renovated in 1996: The crumbling walls of the palas and tower were fortified and the fragments of the former castle chapel were repaired. Volunteers have uncovered the former well and shaft. Today, visitors can once again look down many meters to the water table.
