Old becomes new
The area around Albeck has belonged to the family of Countess Hemma von Gurk since the early Middle Ages. Hemma herself had a (first) Albeck Castle built on the steep mountainside on the Engen Gurk. From Hemma's inheritance, the castle came into the possession of the diocese of Gurk and was used as a judicial and administrative base. At the end of the 17th century, the now dilapidated castle was demolished. 2 km further on, not far from the old Roman road, the late Baroque "Albeck Castle" was built from the stones of the former castle. The old castle gate was reused as the entrance to the castle. A stonemason's mark can still be seen in a rounding. For a long time, the castle served as an episcopal forestry office.
