The bridge was opened in 1968 and it transformed life on the island of Pag to be able to function more as a peninsula.
The location where the bridge was build is characterized by strong winds, called the bora. In a 2019 spring storm, the top wind speed on the bridge was 198 kilometres per hour, according to Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service.
The whole area around the bridge is desert-like, with a lunar appearance. This is due to the strong winds, the bora, which are quite frequent in this area and hinder the growth of vegetation on the sides of the Velebit mountain. It is not the direct wind that has this desolate effect, but the salt. Because the bora covers everything with sea water, which, after evaporation, leaves behind salt.
