Here, near the Malon Bridge, there was once a factory that produced clay roof tiles to replace the old larch-shingle roofs and reduce the spread of fires. The clay came from the Val de Socosta and was initially carried by women using back baskets; later, a cableway was built, powered by a mechanism located downstream. In addition to roof tiles, the factory also produced simple, homely tableware (plates, bowls, and tureens); however, operations ceased in the early 1900s due to the depletion of clay reserves in the Val de Socosta.
Continuing along Via Navarre on the right bank of the Ansiei, not far from the Malon Bridge, you’ll come across the old Fratelli Fanton bivouac, located today where Trail No. 4 joins Via Navarre. Following the construction of the new Fanton shelter, built in 2023 at Forcella Marmarole (2,670 m above sea level), the Auronzo CAI Chapter decided to breathe new life into the old red bivouac—which had served its purpose in Val Baion since the 1960s—through a complete restoration carried out by students from the Enaip vocational school in Longarone with the support of the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation.
