Die Hängebrücke in Grimma feierte 2024 ihr hundertjähriges Bestehen und blickt auf eine bewegte Geschichte zurück, die von Hochwassern, Kriegen und Naturkatastrophen geprägt ist.

Die Geschichte der Brücke beginnt bereits im Sommer 1866, als unterhalb der Gattersburg eine Badeanstalt und ein touristischer Schiffverkehrshafen errichtet wurde und sich eine Verbindung der beiden Muldeufer an dieser Stelle aufdrängte.

Ursprünglich baute man einen floßartigen Steg, der jedoch den ständigen Launen der Mulde nicht standhalten konnte. Nach einer über 40-jährigen Ära einer saisonbedingten Tonnenbrücke, entschied sich der Rat der Stadt Grimma im Jahr 1924 für den Bau einer hochwassersicheren und Jahreszeiten beständigen Drahtseilhängebrücke. Den Zuschlag erhielt die Leipziger Firma Adolf Bleichert, die bereits weltweit Seilbahnen baute.

Der Baubeginn im Mai 1924 markierte den Start eines ehrgeizigen Projekts. Die Brückenkonstruktion soll sich über 80 Meter Spannweite erstrecken. Das gab es so in der Region noch nicht. Doch der Einsatz von Stahl machte es möglich. Die Gesamtkosten beliefen sich auf 56.000 Mark, eine beträchtliche Summe zu dieser Zeit. Am 6. Oktober 1924, genau zwei Jahre nach der Zerstörung der Tonnenbrücke durch Hochwasser, wurde die Hängebrücke fertiggestellt und am 12. Oktober 1924 feierlich eingeweiht.

Die Brücke erfüllte nicht nur ihren Zweck, sondern wurde auch zu einer finanziellen Quelle für die Stadt Grimma. Das Brückengeld, das pro Person und Überquerung (5 Pfennig. Eine ermäßigte 10-Wochen-Karte kostete 1,25 Mark, Arbeiter und schulpflichtige Kinder zahlten 2 Pfennig) erhoben wurde, floss in die Stadtkasse und ermöglichte einen Reingewinn von 7.623,84 Mark im ersten Jahr.

Die bewegte Geschichte der Brücke setzte sich während des Zweiten Weltkriegs fort. 1945 wurde sie von den zurückweichenden deutschen Truppen gesprengt, jedoch 1949 wieder aufgebaut. In den Jahren 1987 und 1990 wurde die Brücke aufgrund maroder Tragseile gesperrt und später erfolgreich saniert.

Die Jahrhundertflut im August 2002 brachte jedoch erneut Herausforderungen. Die Brücke wurde stark beschädigt. Die gesamte Konstruktion drehte sich. Es dauerte Monate, die Brücke von der Last zu befreien. Doch die Sanierung konnte schnell beauftragt werden. Eine Besonderheit dabei war der Einsatz von Schrauben mit Nietköpfen aus England, um die Optik des Bleichert'schen Originals zu bewahren. Am 13. August 2003 wurde die wiederhergestellte Brücke feierlich eingeweiht, genau ein Jahr nach der Hochwasserkatastrophe, in Anwesenheit von Bundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder.

Trotz weiterer Naturkatastrophen, wie dem Hochwasser im Jahr 2013, bleibt die Hängebrücke in Grimma ein Symbol der Beständigkeit und Ingenieurskunst. Heute erfreut sie als Sachsens längste Hängeseilbrücke mit einer Spannweite von 80 Metern Besucher und verbindet das Stadtgebiet von Grimma mit dem Stadtwald und weiterführenden Wegen ins romantische Mudental.
