Der Brückenübergang über die Werra wurde schon im Jahr 1186 als Teil der Handelsstraße Via Regia zwischen Frankfurt am Main und Leipzig erwähnt. Ursprünglich war es eine zweiteilige Brücke bis zur Werrainsel im Fluß, die aber im 14. Jh. durch Hochwasser zerstört und dann wieder aufgebaut wurde. Die durchgängige Steinbogenbrücke wurde um 1600 fertiggestellt und in den nachfolgenden Jahrhunderten immer wieder ausgebessert und umgebaut. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg war die Brücke im Grenzgebiet zwischen Thüringen und Hessen als Staatsgrenze der DDR bis 1989 gesperrt. Seit der Grenzöffnung am 12. November 1989 dient die Brück als Verbindung zwischen Vacha und Philippsthal in Hessen, sie wurde 1990 als "Brücke der Einheit" benannt.
