The Melchior Rock
There are some rumors regarding the naming of this rock. According to old tales, this rock got its name from a conscript named Melchior, who supposedly hid there during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) to avoid being drafted into the army. He lived off what he found in the forest - berries, herbs, fruits, etc. From time to time, citizens of Iggelbach would bring him some food. This was not a given during that difficult time, as people were very poor and saved every bit they could.
The rock formation was equipped with a table and seating group by the South Forestry Office in Elmstein in 1963/64 and again in 1970/71.
Opening times
The Melchior rock can be reached year-round via the marking of the themed trail "Felsenkönigweg". The starting point is the visitor information center at Bahnhofstraße 60, 67471 Elmstein. Alternatively, it can be accessed from Iggelbach via circular trail 17, black number 17 on a white background.
