The Lambsheimer Pond is approximately 20 hectares in size and offers both anglers and swimmers a great nature experience.
Natural spectacles and bathing fun
The sun slowly rises higher. Reddish light, transitioning to orange, covers the water's surface with a shiny shimmer. Some ducks swim slowly, creating small waves behind them. Meanwhile, a woman walking by stops and looks enchanted over the water. A jogger sets out for his round. And two anglers sit on their folding chairs. Bundled up in warming jackets, they wait to see if they will catch any fish. An autumn morning at the Lambsheimer Pond can be a grand natural spectacle, where one can draw energy for the day in different ways.
The lake, about 20 hectares in size, is located between Lambsheim (Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis) and Frankenthal. It is closed in itself and has no surface inflow or outflow. The pond reaches depths of up to nine meters, with its water source coming solely from groundwater. The water level is fairly high, as the Fuchsbach stream flows northeast for about 400 meters – at its narrowest point, there is only about ten meters between the stream and the lake. On the east side, the Brandgraben stream adds to the mix, flowing north before merging into the Fuchsbach above the northeast tip of the lake. The beloved Lambsheimer Pond was created in the late 1960s as a gravel pit. Back then, sand and gravel were extracted for the construction of the A61 motorway. After the removal of deeper layers, the previously excavated topsoil was reapplied. Today, it forms a soft and muddy lakebed.
In summer, particularly the shallower areas are densely covered with underwater plants. This, as the Sportfishing Club Lambsheim happily notes, is the "ideal nursery" for the young of perch and whitefish. In turn, these serve as the food source for the brood of pike, zander, and catfish. The Lambsheimer Pond is part of the local recreation area Nachtweide. From here, a whole series of cycling and hiking trails are easily accessible. A path about two kilometers long leads around it. Numerous benches invite you to linger with wonderful views of the lake. Willows and alders grow around the water's edge. The mostly shallow shore primarily has reeds, while other areas feature clay and sandy soils, some of which are reinforced. It's no wonder that many water lovers gather at the bathing lake in summer. Since 1999, a beach bar with the motto "Summer, Sun, Beach" has been attracting visitors here. Open-air concerts, dances, and parties further enhance the vacation atmosphere and "summer feeling." The offerings are rounded off by a small campsite and the “Fischerhütte” restaurant with a large lake terrace and a winter garden. Here, you will also find supply facilities and sanitary facilities.
