The Olympic Rings are a sculpture by German artist Ruth Kiener-Flamm, installed as part of the 1972 Olympic Games art concept for the Olympic Village.
The kinetic sculpture by the artist Ruth Kiener-Flamm, consisting of five rings standing inside each other, with diameters ranging from 1.50 meters to 4.00 meters, was driven by motors until the end of the 1970s. The Olympic rings, which were arranged differently than usual, thus rotated slowly at different speeds. Due to damage, the motors had to be shut down, as repairs were also unsuccessful. In 2000, therefore, the sculpture was reconstructed by the sculptor Peter Schwenk from light aluminum hollow sections and has since been without motor drive. Now the rings can be moved by hand.
