The complex, consisting of the palazzo, farm buildings and gardens and parks, is one of the most impressive Renaissance buildings in Lombardy.

The palazzo was built in the second half of the XVI century by the brothers Guglielmo and Luigi Vertemate Franchi, who belonged to one of the wealthiest merchant families in Piuro. It was the only building to be spared from the landslide that buried the entire village and many of its inhabitants in 1618. Thanks to the favorable climate, there was a vineyard on the valley side for the production of the "Vertemate Vino Passito" grape selection, an orchard, a vegetable garden and an Italian-style park with a stone fish tank. On the mountain side is a chestnut grove. Farming was practiced for a long time with varying intensity on this estate, which was inhabited almost until 1985. It then passed to the municipality of Chiavenna.
