Die Kapuzinerstraße entwickelte sich seit den 1970er von einer einstigen Wohnstraße zu einer attraktiven Geschäfts- und Einkaufsstraße. Wo heute das Hochrhein-Center steht, hatte einst die beim Bahnhof gelegene Seidenweberfabrik hier Wohnhäuser für ihre Arbeiter und Meister errichten lassen.
Der Straßenname resultiert aus dem ursprünglichen Flurnamen und deutet auf einen früheren Grundbesitz des ehemaligen Kapuzinerklosters aus Rheinfelden Schweiz. Über Jahrhunderte hinweg gehörte das gesamte Gebiet beidseits des Rheins zur „Rheinfelder Herrschaft“ der Habsburger Vorlande.
