Das villenartige Gebäude wurde 1825 von Franz Joseph Dietschy im klassizistischen Stil der damaligen Zeit als Wohngebäude für seine große Familie auf der sonnigen rechtsrheinischen Rheinseite erbaut. Franz Joseph Dietschy war
damals Bierbrauer und Stadtammann in Rheinfelden Schweiz.
In den 1980er Jahren sanierte die Stadt Rheinfelden (Baden) dieses Kleinod zu einem Kulturhaus mit Restaurant, standesamtlichem Trauzimmer und Ausstellungs- und Veranstaltungsräumen, die gerne auch für grenzüberschreitende Anlässe genutzt werden.
Der alte baumbestandene Teil des Stadtparkes vor dem Haus Salmegg stammt in seiner Anlage noch aus Ursprungszeit des frühen/mittleren 19. Jahrhunderts
