Der im 13. Jahrhundert erbaute zylindrische Bau mit Spitzhelm wird auch als Malefizturm, Raubturm oder Eisenturm bezeichnet. Die angebaute Fronfeste entstand 1834 (saniert 1998/2014). Am erhaltenen Abschnitt der Stadtmauer mit Wehrgang zweigt ein schmaler Durchgang ab und führt zum Spielplatz, der im Stadtgraben angelegt wurde. Der Gefängnisturm und die Türme des Oberen Tores und der Stephanskirche stehen verbunden durch die markante Stadtmauer in einer Flucht.

Heute ist im Erdgeschoss die Geschäftsstelle des Frundsberg Festrings e.V. untergebracht. Dieser historische Verein ist Veranstalter des über Bayerns Grenzen hinaus bekannten Frundsbergfestes (nächster Termin: 25. Juni bis 4. Juli 2021).
