History:
Officially, the snow-white building on the market square is also called the "New Building". It was originally built as a market hall. Duke Frederick - called the Pious - is said to have been disturbed by the fact that trade goods such as textiles, clothing and other goods were traded on Schwerin's market square alongside fish and meat and noisy "market women" and in all weathers outside. He ordered construction of a market hall for traders of textiles and other goods, which was completed in 1785. From then on, the building was also known as the "Krambudenhaus". Today, the name Pillar Building is more common.t.
