It is considered the most beautiful department store in Germany and has become more famous than ever since Wes Anderson's Hollywood film "The Grand Budapest Hotel".
The facade of the Art Nouveau building was modelled on the Wertheim department store on Leipziger Platz in Berlin. The atrium and the gallery-like sales areas are particularly impressive. Since its construction in 1912/13, the building was continuously a department store until its closure in 2009. In the Oscar-winning film "The Grand Budapest Hotel", the department store served as the backdrop for the hotel. Today it is used for events, such as the Euro Fashion Award. You can take a look inside through the shop windows or join one of the guided tours. After extensive renovation, the department store is due to reopen soon.
