The city of Tharros, founded by the Phoenicians and later influenced by the Romans, impresses with ruins of temples and thermal baths, residential buildings, a colonnaded street and the Torre di San Giovanni.
Tharros is located on the west coast of Sardinia on the Sinis peninsula, around 20 km west of Oristano, and is considered one of the most fascinating archaeological sites on the island. The ancient ruined city was originally founded by the Nuraghic people and later developed into an important trading center in the Mediterranean by the Phoenicians, Punic and Romans. Ancient basalt roads, the remains of temples, thermal baths, residential buildings and a sophisticated sewage system can still be found in Tharros today. Particularly noteworthy is the necropolis at Capo San Marco, which bears impressive witness to ancient burial rituals. Numerous archaeological finds - including ceramics, jewelry and scarabs - attest to the city's international trade. In the Middle Ages, Tharros was also the capital of the Judiciary of Arborea. You can combine your exploration with a visit to the church of San Giovanni di Sinis or the hypogeum of San Salvatore.
